Surprise 11 features photographs taken during the celebration of Juneteenth 2020 in Washington D.C. in the aftermath of the death of George Floyd and weeks after the repression of the protests near the White House.
Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, Liberation Day, Emancipation Day, Cel-Liberation Day or the Black Fourth of July, is an American holiday that commemorates June 19, 1865 and celebrates the emancipation of those who had been enslaved in the United States. Texas was the most remote of the slave states and the Emancipation Proclamation of January 1, 1863 was not enforced there until after the Civil War had ended. (Dixit Library of Congress)
